Rotary screw element

Replacement Rotary Screw Elements for Industrial Screw Compressors

Aegis Projects Technology supplies rotary screw compressor elements for the repair, rebuilding, and maintenance of industrial rotary screw air and gas compressors.

The screw element is the core compression component of a rotary screw compressor. It consists of precision-machined male and female rotors housed within a compressor casing, where the intermeshing rotors compress the incoming air or gas through a continuous rotary process.

A properly selected replacement screw element can help restore compressor performance, maintain stable operating conditions, and extend the service life of the compressor package.

Description

What Is a Rotary Screw Element?

A rotary screw element, also known as a screw air end or compressor air end, is the primary compression assembly inside a rotary screw compressor.

During operation:

  1. Atmospheric air or process gas enters the compressor element.
  2. The male and female rotors rotate within the compression chamber.
  3. The gas is trapped between the rotor profiles and housing.
  4. The trapped volume progressively decreases as the rotors rotate.
  5. Pressure increases continuously through the compression process.
  6. Compressed air or gas exits the element and proceeds to the downstream separation or process system.

The element is precision engineered to maintain the required rotor clearances and compression efficiency.

Replacement Screw Compressor Elements

Aegis Projects can supply replacement rotary screw elements for suitable industrial compressor applications, subject to compressor make, model, element specifications, and operating requirements.

Replacement elements may be required during:

  • Compressor overhauls
  • Major preventive maintenance
  • Air-end refurbishment
  • Compressor performance restoration
  • Bearing-related failures
  • Rotor damage
  • Excessive internal wear
  • Abnormal vibration
  • Reduced compression efficiency
  • High discharge temperature
  • Excessive oil consumption
  • End-of-service-life replacement

Key Features

  • Precision-engineered rotary screw element
  • Male and female rotor assembly
  • Designed for continuous rotary compression
  • Suitable for industrial compressor applications
  • Available for replacement and overhaul requirements
  • Manufactured according to applicable element specifications
  • Designed for compatibility with the specified compressor model
  • Suitable for compressor refurbishment and maintenance
  • Supports restoration of compressor compression performance
  • Available for oil-injected and applicable screw compressor configurations

Oil-Injected Screw Compressor Elements

Oil-injected rotary screw compressors use oil within the compression chamber for functions such as sealing, cooling, and lubrication.

For these applications, the screw element works as part of an integrated air-end assembly that may include:

  • Rotors
  • Bearings
  • Seals
  • Housing
  • Oil injection passages
  • Oil separation interface
  • Drive arrangement

The correct element must be selected according to the original compressor design and operating parameters.

Oil-Free Screw Compressor Elements

Oil-free screw compressor technology uses a different compression arrangement and rotor configuration from oil-injected systems.

For oil-free applications, element selection must consider the specific compressor design, compression stages, cooling arrangement, pressure ratio, and gas service.

Aegis Projects can assess the required replacement element based on the available compressor and equipment information.

Applications

Rotary screw elements are used in compressor systems serving:

  • Industrial compressed air systems
  • Manufacturing plants
  • Process industries
  • Automotive production
  • Pharmaceutical manufacturing
  • Food and beverage facilities
  • Chemical plants
  • Petrochemical facilities
  • Oil and gas installations
  • Power plants
  • Textile industries
  • Packaging plants
  • Workshops and industrial utilities
  • Instrument air systems
  • General plant air systems

Screw Element Replacement & Compressor Overhaul

Replacing the screw element may form part of a complete compressor overhaul.

Depending on the compressor condition, an overhaul may involve inspection or replacement of:

  • Screw element
  • Bearings
  • Shaft seals
  • O-rings and gaskets
  • Oil seals
  • Coupling components
  • Oil separator
  • Air filters
  • Oil filters
  • Thermostatic components
  • Minimum pressure valve
  • Control valves
  • Other compressor service parts

The actual replacement scope should be established following inspection and compressor operating history.

Selecting the Correct Rotary Screw Element

Correct identification is essential before ordering a replacement screw element.

The following information is recommended:

ParameterRequired Information
Compressor ManufacturerMake / Brand
Compressor ModelExact model number
Serial NumberCompressor serial number
Element ModelExisting element identification
Compressor TypeOil-injected / Oil-free
Drive TypeBelt / Direct / Gear
Operating PressureWorking pressure
CapacityAir or gas flow requirement
Motor PowerMotor rating
MediumAir / Gas / Process Gas
Operating TemperatureApplication temperature
Existing ElementPhotos / nameplate information

Providing the compressor nameplate and existing element identification can help with accurate matching.

Industrial Screw Compressor Spare Parts

The rotary screw element is one of the most important components within the screw compressor air end. Aegis Projects can also support the supply of related screw compressor spare parts, depending on the compressor make and model.

Typical spare parts may include:

  • Screw compressor elements
  • Air filters
  • Oil filters
  • Oil separators
  • Bearings
  • Shaft seals
  • Gaskets
  • O-rings
  • Couplings
  • Valves
  • Thermostatic valves
  • Minimum pressure valves
  • Solenoid valves
  • Compressor service kits
  • Overhaul kits

Engineering & Compatibility

The screw element should not be selected solely based on physical dimensions. Compatibility should also consider:

  • Compressor model
  • Rotor profile
  • Rotor speed
  • Pressure ratio
  • Air or gas capacity
  • Compression medium
  • Lubrication system
  • Cooling system
  • Drive arrangement
  • Operating temperature
  • Original equipment specifications

Final compatibility should be confirmed against the compressor manufacturer’s technical information or the specific equipment data before installation.
