Non Return Check Valve

Industrial Non Return Check Valves for Screw Compressor Systems

Aegis Projects Technology supplies Non Return Check Valves (NRV) for screw compressors and industrial compressed air systems. Also known as check valves, one-way valves, or non-return valves, these components are designed to allow compressed air or gas to flow in the intended direction while preventing reverse flow.

A properly selected check valve helps protect compressor components, maintain system pressure, and prevent unwanted backflow from the compressed air header or downstream equipment into the compressor.

After coolers are available in configurations selected according to compressor capacity, operating pressure, air temperature, cooling medium, installation arrangement, and project requirements.

Description

What Is a Non Return Check Valve?

A Non Return Check Valve is an automatic flow-control valve that permits flow in one direction and closes when flow attempts to reverse.

Unlike manually operated isolation valves, an NRV generally operates automatically based on the pressure difference across the valve.

Typical Operation

Compressor → Non Return Check Valve → Air Receiver / Air Header → Downstream Equipment

When compressor discharge pressure is higher than downstream pressure, the valve opens and allows compressed air to pass.

When downstream pressure becomes higher or compressor discharge flow stops, the valve closes to help prevent compressed air from flowing back toward the compressor.

Key Features

  • One-way compressed air flow
  • Prevents reverse flow
  • Suitable for screw compressor systems
  • Automatic operation
  • Compact valve arrangement
  • Available in different sizes and pressure ratings
  • Suitable for industrial compressed air applications
  • Can be used in compressor discharge lines
  • Helps protect compressor equipment from back pressure
  • Available in configurations selected according to application requirements

Functions in a Screw Compressor System

A non-return valve can perform several important functions within a screw compressor installation.

Prevents Backflow

When the compressor stops, compressed air stored in the downstream system can potentially flow back toward the compressor.

The check valve closes to help isolate the compressor from this reverse flow.

Protects Compressor Components

Preventing reverse flow can help reduce unwanted pressure loading on compressor components and associated equipment.

Supports Pressure Retention

The valve helps prevent uncontrolled reverse movement of compressed air from the receiver or plant header toward the compressor.

Supports Multiple Compressor Installations

Where multiple compressors operate on a common compressed air header, suitable check valves can help prevent compressed air from flowing from one compressor discharge line toward another compressor.

Applications

Non return check valves can be used in:

  • Rotary screw compressors
  • Industrial air compressors
  • Oil-injected screw compressors
  • Oil-free screw compressors
  • Compressed air systems
  • Air receiver systems
  • Compressor discharge lines
  • Plant air headers
  • Instrument air systems
  • Pneumatic systems
  • Process air systems
  • Manufacturing plants
  • Automotive industries
  • Pharmaceutical facilities
  • Food and beverage plants
  • Chemical industries
  • Petrochemical facilities
  • Power plants
  • Industrial utility systems

Common Installation Locations

Depending on the compressor design, an NRV may be installed at suitable points such as:

  • Compressor discharge
  • Air receiver inlet
  • Compressor package outlet
  • Common compressed air header
  • Individual compressor discharge lines
  • Branch compressed air lines
  • Process gas discharge lines where applicable

The exact location should follow the compressor manufacturer’s design and the overall system piping arrangement.

Non Return Valve vs. Isolation Valve

A non-return valve and an isolation valve serve different purposes.

Non Return Check Valve:
Automatically prevents reverse flow while allowing forward flow.

Isolation Valve:
Used to manually or automatically shut off a section of piping for maintenance or operational control.

In many compressor systems, both types of valves may be required.

Selection Parameters

Correct selection is important to ensure compatibility with the compressor and compressed air system.

ParameterSelection Requirement
ApplicationScrew compressor / compressed air

Flow RateRequired compressor flow
Operating PressureSystem working pressure
Maximum PressureDesign pressure

Final selection should be confirmed against the compressor model and system design.

Maintenance & Inspection

Although check valves are generally automatic components, periodic inspection can help identify wear or malfunction.

Inspection may include:

  • Checking for external leakage
  • Checking valve operation
  • Inspecting sealing surfaces
  • Checking for excessive pressure drop
  • Inspecting internal components
  • Checking for contamination
  • Inspecting springs or internal mechanisms where applicable
  • Replacing worn seals or valve components

A malfunctioning check valve can cause reverse flow, pressure instability, or abnormal compressor operating conditions.

Replacement Non Return Check Valves

Aegis Projects can supply replacement NRVs for suitable compressor applications based on available equipment information.

For accurate identification, provide:

  • Compressor manufacturer
  • Compressor model
  • Compressor serial number
  • Existing valve photograph
  • Valve size
  • Connection type
  • Operating pressure
  • Air flow
  • Medium
  • Existing valve part number, if available

This information helps determine the appropriate replacement configuration.
